Common questions

What's included in a private charter?

Every Playa Yachting charter comes with a professional captain and crew, fresh food prepared onboard, and snorkeling gear on snorkel-friendly trips.

Many boats also include extras like towels, paddle boards, inflatable water toys, a chef onboard, and an all-inclusive open bar — but these vary from boat to boat. Your charter specialist will confirm exactly what's included on the one you choose.

Is there an open bar?

Most charters include an all-inclusive open bar with beer, vodka, rum, whiskey, tequila, mixed cocktails, and unlimited juices, sodas, and water. Premium bar upgrades and à la carte bottle service are available if you'd like to elevate your drinks.

Can we bring our own alcohol?

Most charters already include an all-inclusive open bar, so there's usually no need. If you'd still like to bring your own, let us know in advance and we'll check what's possible for your boat.

Do you have vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free options?

Yes. When you book, just let us know if you or any of your guests are vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free — or have any other dietary needs — and we'll be happy to accommodate.

Is snorkeling included?

Yes — snorkeling gear is included on snorkel-friendly charters, with sizes for everyone. We sail to calm, reef-rich spots so you can hop in and explore the water.

What marine life will we see while snorkeling?

While snorkeling the Mesoamerican Reef — the world's second-largest reef system — you may spot sea turtles, stingrays, vibrant reef fish like sergeant majors, and plenty of other beautiful marine life.

How do I reserve, and how much is the deposit?

To secure your yacht you'll put down a deposit — the percentage varies by yacht. The remaining balance is paid on the day of your charter at the marina. If you'd like to pay by credit card, please bring a valid photo ID.

Is the deposit refundable?

Yes — your deposit is fully refundable if you cancel at least 30 days before your charter, or any time the port authorities close the marina due to dangerous weather.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept cash, credit card, and Zelle — and some bookings are paid through a secure WeTravel payment link. Please bring a valid photo ID when making a payment. Credit-card payments may include a small processing fee.

Is there a marina fee?

A marina fee of about $20 USD per person applies on top of the charter price and is paid in cash at the marina on the day of your trip.

Are there any other fees to be aware of?

Beyond your charter price, the main extra is a $20 USD per-person marina fee, paid in cash before departure (cash avoids the credit-card processing fee). Everything else — food, drinks, and any upgrades you choose — is quoted upfront, so there are no surprise charges. Gratuity for the crew is appreciated but always optional.

Is gratuity included?

Gratuity isn't included, but it's always appreciated. A standard tip for the crew is 10–20% of the charter fee.

Where do charters depart from?

Most charters depart from the Puerto Aventuras marina, with some departing from Cozumel. Once your charter is booked, we'll send you the exact meeting point and arrival details.

Do you offer transportation?

Yes — we can arrange private round-trip transportation for an additional cost. Just send us your pickup location and we'll send a quote (as a guide, it's roughly $20 USD per person from Playa del Carmen and $25 from Tulum or Cancún).

How do we get to the boat on our own?

If you'd rather make your own way, no problem — we'll send detailed directions and a map pin so you know exactly where to meet your host at the marina.

What should we bring?

Just swimwear and a sense of adventure! We recommend reef-safe (eco-friendly) sunscreen, sunglasses, a light layer for the breeze, and your phone with a playlist ready for the Bluetooth speaker. Please bring a valid photo ID for payment.

What if we're running late?

Please let us know right away. We recommend arriving 15–20 minutes early; if you're running late, that time may be deducted from your charter so it doesn't overlap with the next booking.

How far in advance should we book?

We recommend booking as early as possible — especially during peak season and holidays — to secure your preferred date and boat. That said, we'll always try to accommodate last-minute requests, so reach out and we'll check availability.

What happens if it rains?

Caribbean weather changes quickly, so a cloudy or rainy forecast is rarely a reason to cancel. It's often raining at your hotel while the marina — about 20 km away — stays sunny, and the sea is just as warm either way. Swimming and lounging on a sandbar in the middle of the sea is magical even in the rain. If conditions genuinely aren't safe we'll let you know — otherwise, it's worth every minute.

Can we celebrate a birthday or special occasion onboard?

Absolutely. Charters are perfect for birthdays, bachelor and bachelorette parties, anniversaries, and proposals. Add-ons like cakes, balloons, banners, a private chef, a photographer, or even a drone session can be arranged to make the day unforgettable.

Can I bring outside vendors?

Outside vendors — DJs, photographers, chefs, and the like — can often join with advance approval, though they may carry extra fees. Some boats require their own preferred vendors, and a few don't allow outside vendors at all. Let us know what you're planning and we'll confirm what's possible for your yacht.

Can we bring kids and children on board?

Yes — children are welcome aboard. Safety is our top priority, so please keep a close watch on your kids at all times; you're fully responsible for supervising them throughout the charter.

Can pregnant guests join a charter?

Yes — the charter itself is safe and comfortable for pregnant guests. Snorkeling, however, isn't recommended during pregnancy, so that part is at your own discretion.

Are your tours, yachts, and boats safe?

Safety is our top priority. Our boats are run by certified captains and crew who work hard to keep every charter safe and secure. Because alcohol is served onboard, we also ask each guest to look out for their own safety and that of others — and everyone signs a short safety and liability waiver before boarding.

Are life jackets available?

Yes — we provide life jackets for everyone aged 6 and up.

What if I get seasick?

We'll do our best to stick to calm waters. If you're prone to motion sickness, we recommend taking a Dramamine beforehand (check with your doctor first) and going easy on the alcohol — the combination can make symptoms worse.

What's the difference between a yacht and a catamaran?

A monohull yacht is sleek and fast with a single hull — great value and quick to reach snorkeling spots. A catamaran has two hulls, so it's roomier and more stable, with much more space to lounge and walk around — ideal for larger groups. Your specialist can recommend the best fit for your group and budget.
